Moving day can be stressful and hectic, and if you aren't careful, it can leave your old and new homes dirty and damaged. Here are a few things you can do to keep both homes in great shape on moving day.
Your movers will likely already have covers to wear over their shoes so they don't track dirt in your home. Take a cue from them and have some handy for you and anyone else who will be helping out on moving day. You can purchase shoe covers online or at your local hardware store. They slip right over your shoes, and they can be thrown away when you are done with them.
For tile and hardwood floors, particularly those in hallways, consider taping plastic tape over the flooring surfaces. This will help to prevent scratches and scuffs as items are moved out of the home. Make sure that they are secured to the floor so they don't bunch up and cause a tripping hazard. You can use duct tape to keep the tarps in place. You can also use runner rugs if you already have them in your home. Move them to the areas that will see the highest traffic during the move, and instruct your movers to remain on the rugs as much as possible.
Your walls can get accidentally marked or scuffed by boxes or furniture. Prevent this by taping brown mailing paper to the walls. This paper can be purchased at local craft or shipping supply stores. Use tape to put the paper in place, and cover the walls at least from the floor to the middle of the wall. If you can't locate this type of mailing paper, you can substitute paper grocery bags. Don't use newspaper, as the ink can transfer to your walls.
To prevent dings and damage to doorways, consider removing the interior doors in your home from their frames. This provides a little bit of extra clearance for large items, and it also removes a barrier that might get in the way on moving day. You may also need to remove the front door for some large items. Talk to your moving company to see if it includes the removal and re-hanging of doors in your moving package.
Of course, you'll still need to do a quick cleanup at the end of moving day, but you won't have to worry about dirty carpets and walls after your local moving company has left. Contact a mover, like Mountain Moving Systems, for more help.
